My Walk In Christianity
Is there something important
in your life that you’ve been hanging on to for a long time? Something
that you can’t necessary explain? Well, everyone does! In my lifetime
I’ve learn to put faith in something that I cannot see but can feel.
The presence of Christ.
I was born in Macao on February
2, 1986. Macao was a place where Buddhism was the dominant religion.
It was no surprise that my grandmother worshipped certain statues.
Not knowing why, I bowed my head and put incense in front of the
statues just like her.
I went on doing the same old
worship until it was time for me to start an education. My parents
chose a private Catholic school, St. Rosa, for me to attend because
it was highly ranked. Their decision changed my life. That was the
first time I got to hear the real Christmas story.
From my memories, St. Rosa
was a pretty school with a big church besides it. I never got to
attend Sunday service during that time even though I wanted to because
no one was willing to keep me company. There was a period twice
a week where my teacher told me stories about Jesus and yet this
man seemed just like any ordinary man to me.
When I moved to America at
the end of third grade I met Auntie Cissy. From then on she took
me to Evergreen Baptist Church. Little by little, I understood the
pieces that I learned about the Bible back in St. Rosa. Jesus was
a man that was sent by God to die for us (our sins). He was special
because he was the only one who never committed sins. Whenever I
felt guilty I thought of Jesus and I’d pray for forgiveness.
There was a time when I’ve
been idle with my daily prayers. Aunt Cissy moved from Rosemead
to Laguna Beach and she started to attend a new church. I was left
with nothing to do on Sunday because Evergreen Baptist was too far
away. My mom made a suggestion that I should find a church nearby.
But I was lazy and I ignored her idea for about a year.
Boredom was probably the main
reason why I finally seek to attend a new church. There was a Southern
Baptist Church just right down the block and so I thought why not
try it and see what happens. Within weeks, I was back on track with
Christ again. I never had that sense of safety before; I felt like
he was always with me. My Sunday school teachers showed me a good
example. They gave more than they expected. I really learned a lot
from going to Sunday school about Jesus’s love for people.
Now that I am a Christian I
don’t think I will ever regret the day I took the chance to participate
in a new church. Even though the Sunday service is a little different
we all have something in common--having faith in God and trying
to spread his gospel to every ear on earth. I am currently looking
forward to learn more about Christ and hanging on to the faith that
I have in him.
